Project Introduction

Greetings! Mabuhay! Agbiag kayo!

These are three greetings in English, Filipino and Ilocano, the three languages which will be used by the GIEU Maui blogsite.

This site is primarily for the use of Philippines-PACIFIC GIEU project participants, their friends, parents and invited community members to communicate with each other. It is also to share insights, ideas and thoughts about the community service learning project called the Philippines-PACIFIC GIEU project. It is also to share experiences on language learning, language use and suggestions to improve both at any time during the duration of this project, namely from now until Fall 2006.

The Philippines-PACIFIC project participants will render community service to the Filipino and Hawaiian communities in Maui, Hawaii from May 22nd to June 12, 2006. They will help prepare for the Barrio Fiesta and celebrate with the Filipino community this annual event, which this year is special because this is the Centennial Year of the Sakadas. The Sakadas are the agricultural workers who came to Hawaii to work  under a contract  from the pineapple and sugar cane plantations starting in 1906. An important aspect of this project is for the student participants to learn about the immigration history, language development, and aspects of the life stories of these sakadas through videotaped interviews with at least twenty four individual sakadas. To prepare for this oral history interviews and to enhance  cultural interactions with the community, intensive pre-trip language lessons in Filipino, Ilocano and Pidgin Hawaiian will be conducted through classroom instructions and through the use of this blog site.
