Kumusta, Mga Kaibigan

This is a common greeting from someone who is about to join a group. It means, in English, "How are you, friends?"

Kumusta is a word of greeting used anywhere in the Philippines and by any Filipino all over the world. It came from the Spanish greeting "Como esta?".

A brief historical note to explain the Spanish language origin of many Filipino words is in order here.

The Philippine archipelago was a Spanish colony until 1898. Las Islas Filipinas was the name given by Spain to the 7,100 islands in the Pacific in the 16th century. In December 10, 1898, these islands became a colony of the United States of America by virtue of the Treaty of Paris and the payment of $20M to the Spanish government. In 1899, Philippine Islands became the new name by which these islands in Southeast Asia became known around the world. Sometimes it was referred to as Islands by immigrants to the US. Later particularly after July 4, 1946 when it ceased to be a US colony, it became Republic of the Philippines or Philippines.

Vocab for Interview Categories

There are two major categories of information which we need to get from our Sakada interviewees. The first category are known as demographic variables. The second are experiential variables associated with their recruitment, travelling to Hawaii, adjustment to the plantation and job, social relationships in the plantation, economic and linguistic adjustment, etc.

This language lesson will focus on vocabulary in Ilocano and Filipino associated with Demographic Variables such as NAME (Given, Middle and Last Name); BIRTH INFORMATION (When and Where);
NAMES OF PARENTS (mother and father); MARITAL STATUS (single, married and widow), EDUCATION (elementary, high school and other training) and WORK EXPERIENCES at the time of recruitment.

How to link to audio file

To link to a file on another server

1) go to the song and copy the url, for example

http://141.213.255.40:16080//blojsom_resources/meta/dannyi/Dahil%20Sa%20Iyo.mp3

2) In Typepad author mode, create a post and in the body of the post, type in the text that will contain the link, for example, LISTEN TO SONG

3) Highlight the words LISTEN TO SONG and click on the INSERT LINK  (chain) icon in the editing toolbar for the post.

4) You will be prompted to enter a url beginning with http: so copy and paste in the url for the song from step 1

5) For the song to open in a new window, click the EDIT HTML tab in Typepad.

6) Type target="blank" into the code after the file name.  Your code will look like this:

--<a href="http://141.213.255.40:16080//blojsom_resources/meta/dannyi/Dahil%20Sa%20Iyo.mp3" target="blank">LISTEN</a>

Test your link.
LISTEN TO SONG
It should now open in a new window that you can resize as you listen and read the lyrics of the song (instead of replacing your blog window containing the text).
